There was a firm knock at her door. Instantly she knew it was John, and her first instinct was not to answer. She didn’t want to hear anything he had to say. She didn’t want him to see her cry, and she certainly didn’t want to hear him tell her good bye.

“I know you’re in there Su-Su. Sitting alone in the dark isn’t going to make me go away. I need to talk to you, and you need to hear what I’ve got to say, and I’m not going away till you open up.”

The banging on her door continued, then stopped for a moment. The patio door rattled as he knocked there too, and she knew he could probably see the outline of her body from his vantage point.

“Su-su, come on, open the door, please?”

Woodenly she moved to the patio door, and unlatched it, turning and walking away before he could get close enough to touch her. She sat in a single side chair, so he couldn’t sit with her, and looked at her hands, so tightly clenched in her lap.

John knelt in front of her, and put one big warm hand over her cold ones, and the other hand lifted her chin to look at him.

“I am so sorry, Love. I never thought that would happen. I wouldn’t hurt you for the world. In fact, I want to take all your hurt and love it away. I told my mother not to bring her. Our parents are friends, and we’ve known each other all our lives. The parents hoped we’d get married, but Mariella and I want different things from our lives. She wants the big city, and I want you.”

“Don’t. Don’t say those things to me. I saw how she looked at you. I saw her hanging on your arm. I’m not blind. I’m not deaf either. I heard her say that the business was ‘our’ business. That implies she has some ownership over the shop and you too. She loves you, and she’d make a good wife for you. You share a history, your family likes her, and she’s young enough to give you lots of babies. Just go. Let me get back to my boring little life, and don’t come back.”

“Sorry, Su-Su Love, I can’t do that.” John slid his strong arms under her legs and around her back, and lifted her easily into his arms. She stiffened as much as one can stiffen when she’s being carried in her lover’s arms. She held her head away from him, and tried to wriggle free. His grasp on her was firm and strong, and she struggled uselessly. He walked purposefully toward her bedroom.

“No, John. We both know you can make me respond to you, but that’s not going to solve our problems. You just can’t use sex to …” He stopped her tirade with a searing kiss. When she tried to pull away, he held her lower lip in his teeth, and sucked it into his mouth. He kept walking toward her bed.
